When Chelsie Reid’s family immigrated to the United States from Guyana, they faced the uncertainty that comes with having a child born with retinoblastoma, a form of eye cancer. Like many parents confronting their child’s vision loss, Chelsie’s mother wasn’t sure what the future would hold. However, from their first connection with Helen Keller Services’ early intervention program, new possibilities began to unfold.

“Through the dedication of the staff at Helen Keller Services,” Chelsie recalls, “I began learning braille, mobility skills, and how to navigate the world.” These early years proved transformative, filled with rich sensory experiences that would shape her development. Music classes became a gateway to creative expression, while physical therapy sessions built the foundation for independence through movement and balance.

At the Children’s Learning Center, every achievement opened new doors. Learning to ride a bicycle wasn’t just about physical coordination – it was about building confidence in her abilities. It was also here that Chelsie had her first meaningful interactions with guide dogs, sparking what would become a lifelong connection.

As Chelsie progressed, Helen Keller Services continued to support her evolving needs. The youth career program provided essential preparation for professional life, teaching everything from workplace etiquette to interview skills. But perhaps most crucially, she gained mastery over digital technology – a skill that would prove invaluable in her academic journey.

“Many people are often surprised by our adeptness in using computers or iPads,” Chelsie shares, “but it is thanks to Helen Keller Services that I acquired these indispensable tools to pursue my aspirations.”

Today, Chelsie is pursuing a master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling at Fordham University, navigating campus life with her guide dog Linny by her side. Her journey from early intervention to graduate studies demonstrates how comprehensive support during crucial developmental years can create pathways to independence and academic achievement.

Much of my success is attributable to Helen Keller Services,” Chelsie reflects. “Their support has been invaluable, not only to me but also to my family. They understood the importance of nurturing students from an early age, enabling us to confidently explore and engage with the world.

Chelsie’s story exemplifies the lasting impact of early intervention and continued support throughout life’s transitions. As she works toward her graduate degree, she carries forward not just the practical skills gained through Helen Keller Services, but also the confidence and determination fostered from her earliest days in the program. Her success demonstrates that with the right support, tools, and belief in what’s possible, individuals who are blind or have low vision can achieve their highest aspirations.

Thank you, Chelsie, for sharing your story with our community!
